Question by Sarah B: Is Hyde Park a Good Location for a Hotel Stay in London?
I just booked a hotel located next to Hyde Park for three nights over New Years Eve. I was told by some friends to stay near Piccadilly since that is where are the parties are but we’ll be taking the tube and public trans so I thought it wouldn’t matter too much. I would like to stay in a safe area that has lots of things to do that will be easy to get to and from. Did I pick a bad location or are the Tubes and trams easy enough to use that I can get to London proper quickly? Also where are some great pubs and eateries and where is the best place to go for the fireworks?
OK Peter. You are an a$$. Obviously I don’t know London or I wouldn’t be asking. I hope the rest of the locals aren’t as rude and condescending as you are. The fireworks? The ones over the Thames at New Years? Are you even from London?

The hotels on hyde park are VERY grand and yes they’re very nice if you can afford it. It takes about 5 minutes on the bus or a 10-15 minute walk from hyde park to the fun stuff. The entire place is packed with wonderful eateries and pubs, just take your pick. But if you want a recommendation the pubs on Curzon street (right off of hyde park) are great.

I wouldnt stay in a picadilly hotel because they are kind of grotty, pick either covent garden or hyde park – both those places you can get very easily to wherever you need to go, they are surrounded by wonderful places to eat and shop, the only difference is hyde park is less built up and a bit further away from city life.

Hyde Park is a good location to stay.
Easy access to all areas of London using buses and the tube!

You’ll be in London proper already, don’t worry. You’ll want the Thames for the fireworks, maybe it’s a quarter hour walk. It’s definitely a safe place.

All the pubs from Hyde park onwards will be authentic looking tourist pubs. If you want a pub with lots of authentic drunken Londoners then head West to St John’s Wood. It’s close. In fact, your hotel might be there since it borders Hyde Park at the North West corner. There are some nice restaurants there too and it’s close.

You picked a good location! Besides, Picadilly is busier. It’s too busy. It’s like Picadilly Circus, as they say. Have fun!

You have not given enough information for a sensible answer. Hyde Park is very large. Some hotels facing the park are 5 star and stupidly expensive and therefore full of wealthy idiot Americans and Arabs with money to burn; others at the other end of the park are dumps. The comment about a “safe area” shows your lack of knowledge about London. Virtually all of London is “safe” (OK, a few outer suburbs aren’t too good). And talking of “getting to” London is totally silly. Hyde Park is IN London. I suggest you invest in a guide book. Get a London-published one. Fireworks? What fireworks?
